Oil pressure gauge reads low when idling in drive.

(1991 Chevrolet S10)
I have an AT and after driving for 20 minutes or so the check gauges light comes on and my oil pressure gauge reads almost zero. When I start it in the morning it idles at 40 and I drive 30mi to work. About 20 minutes into it the pressure drops to about half of that. It's around 45-50 degrees in the morning. On the way home in the afternoon its 55-65 degrees and the pressure never gets to 40. After about 20 minutes it drops almost to zero and this is when the check gauges light comes on. I am hearing a ticking from the engine. I don't have the option to not drive it so how long do I have before serious engine damage occurs?

you may be doing damage now. you probably have an internal issue. you could try using 20-50 oil that wil be temporary until you get it repaired.
