Oil in spark plug well

(1998 Chevrolet Tracker)
in Middletown, CT on September 12, 2009
when tuning up and changing spark plugs, I found oil in the spark plug well. Guessing this means a ring job. What is the estimated cost for this repair?

Oil in the spark plug well if these spark plugs are recessed down a well in the valve cover would indicate the valve cover gasket tube seal gasket is bad. Oil on the spark plug/in the combustion chamber would indicate an internal engine problem such as worn valve guide, worn piston rings.
