Is the bulb for the check engine lamp functional? Turn the key on, but do not start the engine. The light should illuminate as a bulb test. If the lamp does not light with the key on, even for a few seconds, the bulb has failed. A code will only self reset after the condition for setting the code has been corrected. Then the codes may be cleared with a scan tool, and then the vehicle should be driven to reset the diagnostic monitors in the computer.
