My ranger is stuck in 4wd lo

(1999 Ford Ranger)

when i try to switch it back to 2wd it wont recognize that its in 2wd so it stays in 4wd lo how do i fix this please help me ASAP i start my new job tomorrow and need my truck :(

With key on: Lightly tap on transfer case shift motor with a hammer to see if it will shift... May need a helper to select 2 hi while tapping motor... Don't have to 'beat the hell out of it' but tap on the shift motor!... If it shifts to 2 hi, leave it alone until you don't need the truck so badly then check it out!!!... If that don't hekp...
