My muffler makes noise sometimes but not all the time. What could be the problem

I took it to the shop and the repair guy stated that I might need to replace the muffler bc it was probably a pin whole somewhere in the muffler. However the noise stopped but 3 wks later it came back

What kind of noise are you experiencing? A bad baffle in the muffler could come and go. The noise would be a loud rattle or rapping sound. A leak will not come and go.

It sounds like a muffler that has come loose, like off a clamp. However it is not the loud noise that you hear when someone's muffler is about to come off
