My gear shift is stuck in park. What is causing that?

(2000 Ford Taurus)
in Marengo, OH on August 24, 2010
My car has been running fine. Then yesterday when I went to leave work, I tried to put it into reverse and there was a lot of play in my gear stick. No matter where I put the gear stick, my car would start which told me it was stuck in park.

most common failure for this concern is the brake switch on the pedal.have someone check to see if the brake lights come on when pressing the pedal.if they do not I would start diagnosis at the switch.check for power in and out of it while pressing the pedal.
