My car stopped running on the Interstate. The mechanic says I need a new engine because the old one has lost compression. Is that likely?

The car did not appear to have any mechanical problems before it died. No smoke or odd noises.

If he checked for compression and it was very low then yes it could need an engine. Did the mechanic mention anything about a bunch of valves being bent or broken by chance?
