mechanic said it needs a new water pump and that we should do a lot of other things at the same time. the engine now leaks oil from the front end. is this a common problem and what should it cost?

Your timing belt is recommended replacement at 105,000 miles. Would get it done at the same time to be safe. Water pump is driven by the timing belt so better to do both at the same time, cost effective. If water pump fails it could cost you over $4,000, when it takes out the timing belt, (bent valves, ruined or destroyed pistons, etc. Could change oil seals at the same time. More cost effective to do now, before damage & $$$$.
