My 99 ford Taurus is stuck in reverse, was told it could be a cencer?

I was driving to school to get my son parked, then went to back up did so fine. Put it in drive and it made a sound will not go into any other gear

Stripped torque converter/input shaft splines are a very common problem with this transmission requiring rebuild, in most cases!

Needs to be diagnosed, try someplace like AAMCO for a free estimate.
