Trailer Harness Electronic Control Module May Catch Fire

Vehicles with a dealer installed trailer hitch may have an electronic control module that could overheat. An overheating trailer hitch control module could result in a fire.


Please contact your Mitsubishi dealer. They will check to see if your specific vehicle is affected and advise you on what to do next. Always have your vehicle identification number (VIN) handy when you call.


Some vehicles were equipped with a dealer installed trailer hitch wiring harness and control module. The electronic control module can overheat. An overheating module could result in a fire. Owners are being requested to stop using the trailer harness until a newly designed replacement is provided and can be installed by the dealer. This recall began on May 28, 2004. The Mitsubishi recall number is SR-04-004.

Summary: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN EQUIPPED WITH DEALER-INSTALLED TRAILER HITCH WIRING HARNESS AND CONTROL MODULE. THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE CAN OVERHEAT.

Consequence: OVERHEATING OF THE TRAILER HITCH WIRING HARNESS MODULE COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.

Remedy: OWNERS ARE BEING REQUESTED TO STOP USING THE HARNESS UNTIL A NEWLY DESIGNED REPLACEMENT IS PROVIDED AND CAN BE INSTALLED BY THE DEALER. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 28, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT MITSUBISHI AT 1-888-648-7820.
