how do you test or check the crankshaft position sensor and mass air flow sensor

I would think that if there were problems with the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor or airflow (MAF) sensor then the check engine light would come on with diagnostic codes relating to the CKP or MAF.
The CKP outputs a 5 volt square wave signal, you could see that on a graphing meter, the MAF outputs a frequency that varies with airflow which you could see on a graphing meter or a meter that reads frequency.
