Lound noise

(1999 Plymouth Voyager)
My Voyager starting making a loud almost bubbling noise on Saturday on the right side of the engine in front of the passengers side. along with the noise there is a burning smell almost like the smell you get from the brake pads. The sound started when we started up the car and then went away after we drove it a bit. Then it returned yesterday. Does anyone know what this might be?

My educated guess is the A/C compressor froze up, however, have your belt checked as well. The bubbling sound may have been refrigerent or lack of, passing through the A/C evaporator located on the right side of the vehicle inside the heater/AC Housing.
