The lift mechanism has completely failed and the frame of my car was literally sitting on my tires. What is this and how much will it cost to repair.

It's a complex system. You need to find a good MB specialty shop and let them to leak test it and run a computer diagnostic on it. It could be a simple thing as a leaking hose, but it can be a control unit also.
Based on the results they can give you an estimate.
