Knocking sounds are never a good thing! Of course check the engine oil level. Is the knocking sound associated with a drop in performance (knock sensor can retard ignition timing if it senses knock or detonation). Is the engine starting to misfire or run poorly. Time to get things check engine out in case its oil starvation, compression check, cylinder leakage test ect...to check the "strength" of your engine.
