On April 1, 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 Kia Sportage. Kia motors corporation (kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 rondo and sportage, model year 2007-2011 sorento, model year 2007 sedona, model year 2010-2011 soul, and model year 2011 optima vehicles. the stop lamp switch in the affected vehicles may malfunction. a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the park position and causing the electronic stability control (esc) malfunction light to illuminate.

Kia is recalling these vehicles because the stop light switch can fail resulting in loss of brake light operation and may experience other electrical concerns.

Kia will begin notifying owners of affected vehicles during May 2013. If you are experiencing problems with the brake lights, cruise control, gear shifter, push button start, or Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system system, or if you don't receive recall notification and you feel you should have, please contact your dealer. They may ask for your vehicle identification number (VIN), so please have it handy when you call. The Kia recall number is SC098.
