I have been told by a trusted mechanic that both rear coil springs are completely broken. can I continue to drive this car? what are the risks?

I was told recently by a mechanic, my right side rear coil spring looked dangerous. He instructed me to be careful when driving. I can't afford a new or newer car and will take my chances. I have a later model Ford Escort.
