Is $1,400 a high amount for replacement of the a/c compressor?

(1990 Plymouth Voyager)
in Alexandria, VA on July 30, 2010
Vehicle taken to regular service station today, suddenly the a/c gives me a breeze but no cold air on any setting except for on first starting. Diagnosis is replace the a/c compressor plus other things, retro fit to the new kind of compressor...this is a lot of money and much higher than this website shows. Female owner. Do you think this is too high?

You can get that estimate here www.repairpal.com/estimator and get other estimates from local shops here www.repairpal.com/directory probably better off getting estimates from shops that repair AC systems on a regular basis
