Is $1,400 a high amount for replacement of the a/c compressor?

(1990 Plymouth Voyager)
in Alexandria, VA on July 30, 2010
Vehicle taken to regular service station today, suddenly the a/c gives me a breeze but no cold air on any setting except for on first starting. Diagnosis is replace the a/c compressor plus other things, retro fit to the new kind of compressor...this is a lot of money and much higher than this website shows. Female owner. Do you think this is too high?

You can get that estimate here and get other estimates from local shops here probably better off getting estimates from shops that repair AC systems on a regular basis
