Intermittant automatic headlights

(1999 Buick Regal)
When using the headlights automatically, they sometimes turn off while driving. The headlight switch will turn them on. The taillights stay lit so I believe the sensor and computer know it is dark out. Is this possibly a relay problem and if so, which relay?

Additional information:
I've noticed that when the lights don't turn on the heater fan doesn't work either but if the fan works then the lights work too. I'm suspecting a loose connection in some plug that connects the dashboard to the rest of the car. I've wiggled everything I can find to no avail. Is there a connection buried under the dash somewhere? Where's the computer in this car?

FYI, I finally went to a dealer and the problem was the ignition switch. Strange but true. $400 but it's fixed.
