Indicator lights malfunctioning and erratic

(1997 Volkswagen Golf)
in Point Roberts, WA on February 16, 2014
Indicator lights went from not working intermittently to blinking twice or four times as fast when activated.

When brakes are depressed, left indicator does not work. As soon as brakes are released, indicator works again. Left indicator blinks at 2x normal speed, right indicator binks at 4x speed.

Left brake light stays on when car is off.
Trunk open warning in dash is on all when car is running, trunk is definitely closed.

Tried switching the relay with one salvaged from a wrecked car, but this did not solve the problem.

As a side note, the intermittent wiper setting does not work at all either.

All bulbs are fine. All wires seem to be connected.

You probably have a bad or some bad grounds somewhere. Things are feeding back because of grounds. Where? check everything, take them loose and clean any you can find.
