do I have to take the tilt steering apart to change the ignition rack gear

yes you do. gm sells a kit for the rack. the column has to be dis assembled to replace the assembly. Is the collar ok?? was it a stolen vehicle?? common problem and the parts are still available.

no it was not stolen gear just broke but thanks a lot do you know is it a hard job to takethe tilt steering apart or will it just pop back together
it is a process. you need a steering wheel puller, a depressor for the locking plate to remove the c clip. and a special puller for the tilt mechanism. you may want to consider letting a shop do it for you. you need to weigh out the cost of tools versus the cost of labor and your time.
