If the timing chain breaks will it damage the heads

(1999 Chevrolet S10)
Truck was making a nocking noise and then cut off. It will turn over but won't crank. Is it the timing chain

Engine size is always important information - however timing chain failures are not extremely rare for either of the engine options.

Look elsewhere for the CRANKS OK - BUT - WILL NOT START problem.

Compression test will confirm whether timing chain is intact - OR - not.

Correction - engine timing component failures ARE extremely rare for either of the engines.

It is quite common to see in excess of 300k miles on these engines without any timing component failures!
