I just purchased this Ranger XLT with 168k on it, a bit of oil around top of left side of engine and small amount of blue smoke out exhaust when cold started. Without spending a ton of money, what should I check?

Sounds pretty much like normal operation for that mileage.. Drive it awhile to see what's going on .. IF it uses a qt of oil every week, then it might be a problem!! .. It's close to or may be 17 years old... Depending on production date.
