I have to crank the engine 2 times to start it. It is getting worse. Why?

(1999 Mercury Mountaineer)
My car has to be cranked once and then the second time it will start. It will never start on the first try no matter how long I crank it. What needs fixed?

Two problems are going on at the same time.Stop riding around on less than quarter tank.Your fuel filter are clogged and need to be replaced.IF you don't the pupm will fail shortly or is in the process that's why it takes two starts. You could grab a botle of lucas tank clean and line cleaner which should break down gas tank build ups
