If the engine really overheated badly it may have blown a head gasket and has allowed water into the cylinders making the engine hydraulic lock. If the engine won't turn over at all, remove the spark plugs and try to crank over the engine if water comes out of the plug holes while cranking the engine has a blown head gasket. if the engine cranks over but doesn't start the ignition system may have water on it that once it dries out may restart. A compression test, cylinder leakage test, a test of oil pressure and perhaps what is called a "block check" (looks for presence of carbon monoxide in the cooling system) are good tests to determine the health of an engine.
