How do you open clips on spark plug wires?

(2004 Ford Explorer)
in Howell, NJ on May 15, 2011
I went out an purchased replacement spark plug wires, as my Explorer has 120K miles. I have been unable to open the clips that are holding the factory wires in place and don't want to break them. How do you open the clips without ruining them?

Ford have a special tool # 303-106 ( T74P-6666A) but it's not necessary, you just have to press/squeeze the clips, maybe use a small screw driver to assist removing the clips. It's important to twist the spark plug wire boot at the plug to "break it lose" from the spark plug, use dielectric grease on the inside of the spark plug wire to stop it from bonding it self to the spark plug making it difficult to remove next time you change the plugs.
