How do you check your own alternator to see if it is working right

(1991 Chevrolet S10)

I would like to check it myself at home with out taking it to shop.

Hello you will need a volt meter and a load tester for the battery.The voltage when the vehicle is at idle should be at or around 13.5v-14.5v and the battery sould have at least 12v with the engine off and after a load test you connect the tester and meter just like battery jumper cables.HAVE A BLESS DAY from DR. keep your positive battery cable loose. jut enough to start your vehicle once started remove the battery cable. If the engine runs your alternator is fine. If it dies repair altinator.
