How do I know if my transmission is blown? It will go into drive but idle's high and will not pick up speed

(1999 Ford Expedition)
in Duncanville, TX on April 06, 2015
Yesterday leaving my house started the truck put in drive and when I pushed the gas it drove but rpm was high and it was not catching speed. Checked transmission fluid. Was low so added fluid. Tried to drive again did the same thing. Had someone come pull us home and noticed transmission fluid was leaking.

Was it totally empty when you added fluid?..did it smell burned or look brown?..did the rpm stay at one rpm speed or raise like a slipping clutch?.is this an automatic? Text 570 516 0645
