Heater core replacement

(1991 Ford Explorer)
I am going to replace my heater core in my explorer, as far as having the a/c system evacuated.do i have to do this if there is very little in the system?....i do not use the a/c so can i change the heater core without having this done?

actually, it is pretty easy to do. remove the glove box assembly. the case cover is right there. remove the 2 heater hoses under the hood. remove the inside cover screws and the core unbolts and comes right out. it only pays 1.2 hours in a shop. no ac involvement.
