Hard starting (cold weather)

(1990 Ford Bronco)
in Willcox, AZ on June 06, 2011
(popping and sputtering going up hill (after engine is hot)

I have a 1990 Ford Bronco that after I drive it to town (20 miles there and 20 miles back) it starts to sputter, pop and back firer as I go up the mountain I live on. The clime is about 350 feet from the road up to my house and about 1000 feet from town to my house. I also have a hard time starting in cold weather. I have replaced the MAP sensor but it still does it? I replaced the IVC and still it sputters and pops as I go up to my home. The engine has been replaced and has less then 100,000 miles, it has had a complete tune up and all filters and PVC valves replaced don’t know what it can be.

"Popping and sputtering" could be caused by a few things. If the engine is mechanically sound then it needs to be determined if is a fuel or ignition problem. The fuel pressure should be about 40 psi with the engine running and supply about 1 pint in ten seconds of running/cranking. The fuel filter is easy to change (it's under the truck on the chassis rail but needs quick disconnect tools to disengage the fuel line from the filter, any auto parts store has them). Check for obvious vacuum leaks, then check the ignition system thoroughly. Check the distributor cap wires and rotor, with the engine running put water in a Windolene bottle, tile and shower cleaner, or similar spray bottle. Mist water onto the spark plug wires and cap, if the insulation is good the engine idle should not change, if a plug wire is weak the engine will falter and you may see or hear the spark shorting to ground.
