(2002 BMW 330i)
Temp Guage not going hot, replaced thermostat 4 months ago, so I don't think it's thermostat.

Hello,
The color of the smoke will tell a good story.
-White - coolant
-Black - fire or gasoline

The location of the smoke tells another story
-Tailpipe - combustion of coolant, gas, oil
-Under hood - a large leak or a fire

Now, the correlation between the temp gauge, the fuel pump is not strong, so if both showed up after replacing a fuel pump, I would encourage you to tow the vehicle to a professional for assistance.

Yep, it was under the hood- actually saw it coming from underneath engine and mostly white. The oil dipstick was goopy/milky, which I was told is prob coolant leaking into oil?
I guess my concern is, wouldn't a reputable mechanic look around, checking oil levels, etc? He claimed to have test driven the vehicle numerous times after repair and that all seemed well. When I picked up the vehicle, it took several minutes to heat up, indicating to me it hadnt been started or driven for days. It's just not adding up.
