Fuel gage problems

(1999 Oldsmobile Alero)
in Ellsworth, KS on July 28, 2010
I own a 99 olds alero and have it owned it for about 7 years. Two years after I got it I started to have problems with my fuel gage going haywire. At first it started when I would get below a quarter of tank of gas. If I stopped at a stoplight for a long time, the gage would go down to empty then back up to full or three quarters of a tank. Now it will do this right after I fill up sometimes. It's hard for me to tell how much gas I actually have in my car because I don't know if my gage is accurate.

The 1999 Alero had a problem that was affected by a fuel level regulator that was inside the gas tank. When it was becoming known, GM issued a notification about it. However, because it was made known after the warranty on the vehicle had expired, it because an owner problem. The 'fix' involves replacement of the fuel level regulator (which is about $120). However, because it involves removal of the gas tank itself, the labor costs bring this item to be about $500 to solve. Hope this help
