Fuel gage not working

Hello, on a vehicle of that vintage, an analog gauge is utilized. This consists of a float in the fuel tank that varies electrical resistance when the system is powered to direct the fuel gauge where to point to. Maximum resistance is present when the float is all the way at the top with a fuel tank, and as the fuel level drops, the float drops, and resistance drops. In turn, the gauge drops. The circuit could be compromised at the float in the tank, the wiring to the gauge, or within the gauge itself. It's a pretty simple system, but accessing the float is never simple, being submerged in the fuel tank. Basically, the best test is to check if the float is intact, and manually manipulate the float with the ignition "on" to see if the gauge responds in turn. Also, resistance must be measured in the circuit to ensure it is varying. I would recommend enlisting a local shop to help you with this test and repair.
