Diagnosed the problem correctly, faulty single injector and incorrect injector model for the vehicle. Very clear about the cost and time estimate. Brought car in to have regular service which included oil and coolant change. Ended up going back for water pump replacement and had coolant changed a second time in less then a week, synthetic oil had been changed a few weeks earlier so we spent more than we should have for 2x oil and coolant changes in less than a month.

The initial problem is still not fixed (smell of burning oil in the cabin) and in addition, I still have some noises from loose parts on the front end which were a result of the first and second attempt to repair, after taking almost the whole front end off searching for the problem and was not addressed at the time I picked up the car the second time. I went in a third time at no cost to have the shop search again for the smell and asked to fix the rattling, but they could not find it. Will need to go in a fourth time to have the noises fixed and I found the source of the original oil smell which they could not find the first two times. I paid for over $2000 in repairs for minor oil leaks that were not part of the original smell in the cab. The minor leaks were not noticeable as I don't burn or leak any oil. I simply ran the engine 5 minutes and saw the source of the smell something burning just below the exhaust manifold. Funny how they could not find after plunking $2000 into the search process .

I needed the repairs done (Serpentine belt idler bearing and pulley) as quickly as possible because the truck wasn't safe to operate and I had to go on a 100+ mile trip. I called about 4:00 p.m. and they had one of the parts there before closing and had all the part there by 8:30 a.m. the next morning and I was on my way with a new pulley/bearing and two new belts by 9:15 a.m. Great service, fair prices, and excellent work.

Truck starts and runs fine during evening ...
FUEL PUMPS ON THIS VEHICLE ARE NOTORIOUS FOR FAILING. I DONT THINK ITS RELATED TO THE TEMP OF THE AIR BUT INSTEAD DUE TO THE FUEL TEMP. THE FUEL CIRCULATED TO THE ENGINE AND BACK TO THE TANK CONTINOUSLY CAUSING THE FUEL TO GET REAL HOT, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE FUEL IS LOW. WHEN THE IS NOT RUNNING AND THE KEY IS TURNED TO THE ON, NOT RUNNING, THE FUEL PUMP RUNS FOR 2 SECONDS NORMALLY. WHEN THE ENGINE DIES AND DOES NOT START YOU NEED TO LISTEN FOR WHETHER THE PUMP RUNS FOR THE 2 SECONDS OR NOT. IF NOT, IT IS LIKELY THE FUEL PUMP IS BAD. IF THE PUMP DOES NOT RUN YOU MIGHT TRY BANGING ON THE BOTTOM OF THE GAS TANK A FEW TIMES AND TRYING AGAIN TO SEE IF IT STARTS RUNNING. THE PUMP MAY BE SIEZING UP DUE TO GETTING HOT. THERE COULD ALSO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL PUMP RELAY.

I checked for any Tech Service Bulletins for this condition and found none. You might try following the instructions below again and see if the computer will change it's attitude.

Resetting the Change Oil Soon Light
Remember, after changing the engine oil, the system must be reset. To reset the system:

1.Remove the cover on the fuse relay center under the hood.

2.With the ignition key in RUN and the engine off, press the red "Oil-Reset" reset button and hold for 5 seconds. If the CHANGE OIL SOON light is flashing, the system is reset.

The light will flash up to 30 seconds or until the ignition is turn off. However, if the light comes on again and stays on for 30 seconds at the next ignition cycle, it did not reset. You'll need to reset the system again.

It gets louder if I turn. at about 50 I do...
Does the noise increase when you veer to the right or left at about 35-40mph? If it does, the problem is likely to be the wheel bearing on the opposite side of the direction you are turning. to replace the bearing, including the tax is $400.18 as long as the wheel hub has not been damaged. The additional cost of the hub is $97.64 + tax. I highly recommend having this checked out right away, wheel bearings can get much worse quickly.

Tests/Procedures:

1. Code 31 relates to the right rear wheel speed sensor, code 32 relates to right front. Clear the code with a BMW compatible scan tool. Then retest and see if a code resets as a hard fault. The wheel speed can be checked with most BMW software using the data stream.

2. Unplug the Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS). Turn the key on. Test the voltage on both pins on the wire harness side of the connector. They should both read 8v.

3. Reconnect the sensor. Back probe the sensor for testing. May need an adaptor to connect to the harness as the pins are very small. One of the wires should show a 2.5v wave form as the wheel is turned.

Tech Tips:

The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) uses the signal from the Left Rear (LR) speed sensor to calculate the vehicle speed. The traction control module exports a speed signal to the IPC via the bus line. If the traction control module is replaced, it needs to be coded to the vehicle at the dealer, otherwise the Traction Control (TC) light will come on. There is a pattern failure of the traction control module for these codes and no speedometer operation. BMW bulletin #340299 addresses '5' and '7' series vehicles produced between 9/98 and 3/99 with a wheel speed sensor fault. The bulletin includes an updated part number, but have not seen this fix used a whole lot yet.
