Estimated cost of replacing fuel pump

(1999 Ford Contour)
in Sacramento, CA on December 23, 2010
Car has 3 catalytic converters. Strong oil-like smell. Check engine light came on and would not go off. Humming sound when first putting into drive on cold mornings. Occasionally car would sometimes not start, but would 5 minutes or so later. Eventually installed new battery. Worked fine for a while but oil-like smell got worse. One day car lost power while driving on the freeway and just stopped. Had car towed into my usual mechanic and was given approximately $800.00 estimate to replace fuel pump.
