Do I need to look into replacing my transmission or is something else to blame?

(1999 Ford Escort)
For a few months now my car seems to rev in the RPMs when accelerating and almost gets stuck in the gears (she's an automatic) and when I let off the gas it'll shift and then be fine. After "babying" her for awhile this past week she's been idling in the low 1000-2500 RPMs and when accelerating she won't go over 2500 and it takes her awhile to gain speed and again seems to lag with switching gears. Once she gets to the speed I need she seems to be fine but it's the process of getting her there that isn't. Plus if I have to stop at a light or something and then go again the process starts over. I'm the second owner and I've had her since 2005/2006 and everything is original on her except for a few things like the battery, spark plugs, minor things really. Any advice on what I should be focused on fixing?? Or what it could be?? Any estimates for repairs?

u could have a plugged converter or something in the tranny but I would check the converter first also check the fluid level and see if it smells burnt
