Q: Do I have to change my fuel pump just to replace the fuel level sensor? on 2006 Chevrolet Malibu

no but it would be wrong to replace one without the other. it is a module assembly. you can purchase the sender by itself but the additional labor offsets the cost difference.

by the way, did the shop do a sweep test of the dash unit and check all the connections before coming to this conclusion??

no they didn't, they wrote up an estimate of $1300.00 to replace fuel pump with sensor.
