D light is not lit, can't shift into lower gears

(2004 Honda CR-V)
in Kingston Springs, TN on October 22, 2011
My 2004 CRV drives fine but yesterday I noticed when shifting into drive the "d" light was not lit. Today I noticed, with foot on the break, I can shift into reverse, neutral and the lights are on but when shifting into drive there is no light and I cannot shift into the lower gears. Would appreciate any help.

The D light bulb commonly burns out (It's the gear the transmission spends mos of it's life in). It sounds like the linkage cable may have got damaged, check the transmission oil level. On that Honda the oil level is checked with the engine OFF.

Thank you so much for your response. This is the only car we have and my husband had a stroke and I have to rely on others for advice when this type of thing happens...will take it to the mechanic in the morning.

Thanks again.
