Q: Could black dirt on metal under hood be a precursor to a problem with the a/c? on 2002 Toyota Corolla

Is it better to spend now to identify this problem with dye and repair it before anything bigger occurs or nothing to worry about? A/C currently works fine but this was shown to me as something I might want to check out. I wish I could be more specific but this is all I know at this time.

Over the years - the rotating drive belt will naturally sling various debris up onto the hood in a straight line that is usually black in color .. That's common .. However this residue should not be wet! .. Just for piece of mind, check the applicable fluid levels... Seasoned mechanic can quickly tell if it's a genuine problem!
