Check enigine light

(1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo)
in Cudahy, WI on November 03, 2010
My check enigine light came on about a year ago.It wouldn't go off, causing a failed emissions test. They also failed my gas cap which I've replaced twice and still failed. Now I took it back to emissions and the light won't come on for the systems check. Now I've had it on a dianostics machine and showed no problems. This has become a major problem for me .. Not once but twice I've taken it to the shop for this problem. Is there a fuse I need to replace or something else?

If the check engine light is on, then there are data and trouble codes stored in the engine controller. Find a shop where the mechanic has a scanner to read the codes and data, then he could diagnose and repair the problem.

Well after the light being on for "about a year" it is a very good possibility it is simply burnt out. There is no diagnostic code for this. Did you tell these shops just to check for codes or did you tell them the light doesn't come on when you first start the car? I suspect you just told them to check for codes. Because if it doesn't come on when you first start the car a burnt bulb is the first thing you check for.
