Q: Check Engine Light with temp gauge H on 2004 Hyundai Accent

Rookie cbe0621eac06868b3efe0d8d1d3611e23c60d3114864ea2ec19a68cfbd3eebab
My husband has a Hyundai Accent 2004. We brought it to a mechanic due to the check engine light. They replaced the spark plugs, but the light still comes on once in awhile. But, today as he drove it to work, the temp. gauge shot up to H after driving it in less than 10 miles. What could be wrong??? I'd like to have an idea before I take it in again.

Overheating could be many things, stuck thermostat, major cooling system leak, but definitely not a good idea to drive the car if it gets hot, you could do more serious and expensive damage. What were the previous codes stored (they would have looked like P0303, P0301, ect....) A scan tool is required to retrieve the codes stored in the computer of your car and the codes found would indicate what to investigate. Hyundai as a car manufacturer put a lot of free technical information and workshop manuals on line for Hyundai owners. Check out www.hmaservice.com lots of great information.
