Changing the thermostat

I'm trying to change the thermostat and tried using a socket with extension and it did not fit...does another part need to be removed to get to it?

you must remove the pulley on the sterring pump and then remove the bolts holding the pump there are 2 bolts on the bottom one long bolt on top and 2 bolts coming in from tthe front and back once these are removed the bracket will pull forward allowing you to remove the thermosts housing , bracket bolts are 13mm and the housing is 10mm
