Q: Changed the timing belt and now the check engine light will not reset. on 1998 Volkswagen Cabrio

Rookie cbe0621eac06868b3efe0d8d1d3611e23c60d3114864ea2ec19a68cfbd3eebab
My mechanic changed the timing belt on my new "gently used" 98 VW Cabrio convertible about 3 weeks ago and the check engine light can't be reset. It's turned off and immediately comes back on. I don't have an operaters manual either that I've been looking all over for. Hopefully someone can steer me in the right direction. Thanks so much.

what fault code is stored? if there is a code for cam/crank allocation it means the timing is off and needs to be redone. other than a mistake on belt assembly there may be a hose or wire that failed due to being disturbed during repair (not allways the shops fault, stuff happens)
