Car normally over heats. Possible that previous owner put additive in radiator?

(1999 Mercury Sable)
Have had car for over 6 years. Changed thermostat a few times. Original one covered with black gunk. Overheats most of the time to the point you can smell it inside the car. Could an additive completely stop up cooling system and other times not plug it up completely? Have changed the fluids, etc., also when hot transmission slips. This can occur within 2-3 miles.

Temperature gauge will read less than 50%. I had a leak once and NO liquid in overflow tank. The car was very hot, but the gauge did not indicate this. It remained under 50%. So what are you considering?

Best bet is to have a scan tool hooked up so live data can be viewed to see what the actual engine temperature is! Then it an be compared to the gauge reading to check the accuracy of the gauge... IF both readings correspond and guage reading is not HOT..... No worries!... The hot engine smell is more likely to be caused by something else... Oil leakage onto hot exhaust perhaps...

yes bars stop leak has black pellets in it. they melt and tend to do this goo thing.your suppose to remove thermostat when you put it in, you could have plugged sections of your radiator, at least flush the system you can get a connector to hook up a garden hose at local parts stores..... but id replace your radiator SOOON because this is the only component that effects the transmission in cooling system.. smell your tranny fluid to see if you smell a burn smell if so do a fluid change quickly head gasket failure and transmission failure will be sure to come if you keep driving it like this

I rarely drive the car because I am afraid of what will happen. Replacing the radiator is a great idea! What else would I need to replace along with that? Hoses, etc.? What about the heater core? I have no idea of what the expense would be, but it only has 127,000 miles. A new kit was put in transmission not many miles ago, but I suppose one time HOT would be enough.
