Car just died while driving on the highway

(2000 Plymouth Neon)

Today my mom was driving on the highway and her just died -she said lights came on and it just stopped running -when the tow truck driver came I asked him what he thought was the fluid under her car was -he said antifreeze but my mom said the car did not overheat ....after we got home and opened the hood we checked where you put oil in the car and it smelled like gas ...any thoughts
