Cant shift into any gear

(1999 Ford Escort)

When parked and pressing on the clutch I cant get into an gear. Then the car shut off while my foot was on the clutch. What might be the problem?

The escort has a hydraulic cluth so you may have a faulty clutch master or slave cylinder. If either is faulty the clutch will stay engaged causing the car to stall when at a stop.

thank you very much, that was helpful. Now I just need some money to get it really checked out and repaired. But now I know what to ask for:)

You can purchase a cluth and slave cylinder for about $100.00. You will also need fluid to bleed the system, like you would do with brakes after replacing the parts.
