Can you have break failure overnight and why?

(2004 Pontiac Aztek)
I had good breaks going to work but when i left I had no breaks whatsoever, how can this happen?
What seems to make the problem better or worse? if the car is off the breaks are hard, if the car is on they go all the way down
How long have you had this problem? hrs

This is indicative of a failed brake system ‘master cylinder’ - OR - brake fluid leakage .. Check brake fluid level in master cylinder - IF that’s ok - seek professional *hands-on* assistance as this is not a diy repair.
