Can you bypass the ABS system on a 96 chevy C1500? I am having some issues with it

The brakes try to lock up when you apply a small amount of pressure to the pedal

Rear brake locking up - check for contaminated brake shoes as in brake fluid or differential lube - front brake locking up - check for binding caliper - on the opposite side.

Any contaminates at all on the brake ‘shoes’ will cause brake lock up.

A binding caliper tends to over heat the brake pads on that particular side then the brake on the opposite side does all the work and ‘seems’ to be locking - this should also be noticeable as steering wheel ‘pull’ when applying brakes..

ABS is irrelevant.

In any event this needs to be evaluated *hands-on* by qualifying personnel - do not know you related skill level .. brake system malfunctions can be difficult to diagnose.

When you apply pressure to the pedal, the pedal jumps up and down. Also you can feel all 4 brakes grabbing then releasing like if you are trying to skid out of control

Pushrod thanks for the information. My truck has brake shoes on the rear. On the left side, the pads had came off the metal shoe. The wheel cylinder was leaking brake fluid and dissolved the glue on the pads. They were not riveted on. And on the left side, one side of the cylinder was froze up and only one shoe was moving. All is fixed now. Thanks again

No, you cannot bypass this system -- you can only diagnose and repair conventional and anti-lock brake systems. Locking up is likely a mechanical issue not an ABS issue -- ABS serves to prevent lock up.

Thank you. The pedal jumps up and down when you apply just a little pressure. I took out the fuse and it does not do it but there is almost no pedal. It will stop but it's not very safe

DaveJM thanks. I found bad brake shoes on the right rear. The pads had came off the metal part of the shoe. A leaking brake cylinder on the right. On the left side, the wheel cylinder was partially froze up. Only one shoe was working. All fixed now. Thanks again

Great, glad to hear it's resolved, makes total sense: mechanical issue.

Yep. The wheel cylinder leaking brake fluid dissolved the glue on the shoes. This new set has rivets.
