Can a auto parts store check a distributor?

Is there a way to check a distributer to see if everything is in working order

The best test to see if the sensors in the distributor are functioning correctly is to monitor there output signals on an a oscilloscope but the problem here being is that sometimes the sensors fail intermittently (usually due to heat) so the sensor may need to fail or show a "poor signal" to pin point failure.
