Broken hood release cable

the hood release cable snapped.i tried using a pair of vice grips but the cable kept on fraying when i could grab any of it.I have removed the grill and located where the cable leads in to the release but that end came off.Any ideas?

This is very tough, I often have to remove the whole release mechanism. Often when the release mechanism gets old or rusty, it will snap the hood cable. So, see if you can use some stiff wire from a coat hanger and get the hood mechanism to release, that has saved me many times on a broken GM hood release cable.
