Brake problems

(1991 Cadillac DeVille)
Sometimes when I push on my brake pedal, the brakes work fine and now sometimes the pedal will go to the floor and I have to take my foot off of it and quickly push the pedal again to get the brakes to work.Scary.
Also sometimes I only have to push the pedal a little for them to work and sometimes it goes halfway before they work.Sometimes the brakes work and sometimes they do not.
Anyone know what causes this?

Anytime your brake pedal behavior changes, this is an indication of a problem with the brake hydraulic system. How is the brake fluid level? If there is no fluid in reservoir, adding will do no real good if there is air in the lines or master cylinder.

When you press on the brakes (and they are working), does the pedal seem to "fade" or continue on its way to floor? This is a good indicator of a leak in the system, possibly in the master cylinder, lines, brake calipers, or wheel cylinders.

If you're not equipped to inspect the brakes I highly recommend getting a brake inspection from a good shop. If your brakes are not reliable, consider getting a tow to the shop for your safety and others' safety.
